Church History
Our History: 100 Years of Grace
Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church is rooted deeply in the Lutheran tradition. From its beginnings as a mission congregation in the early 20th century, it has grown into a vibrant and enduring community of faith serving Drexel Hill and the greater Philadelphia region.
Key Aspects of Our Heritage
Lutheran Roots
Like many Lutheran churches established throughout the Philadelphia area, Grace helped anchor the faith and community life of both immigrant and American-born families as Delaware County grew.
A Defining Pastorate
From 1982 to 2011, Rev. Edward R. Oswald faithfully served Grace for 29 years. His ministry strengthened the congregation and connected it deeply to the wider Lutheran presence through synod leadership, chaplaincy, and community engagement.
Community Connection
Grace has long been active in the regional Lutheran network, participating in the local Ministerium, the District Executive Committee, and shared ministries that support neighbors in need.
Growth & Building
Over the decades, the church has expanded its worship, education, and fellowship spaces, enabling Grace to continue responding to God’s call to worship, learn, and serve.
